Carmel Valley is named after the Camelite Sisters of Mercy, similar to Carmel Mountain Ranch. It is one of the newest neighborhood in the county, and used to be all farmland. Before that it belonged to the Ipai tribe, and sometimes their artifacts can still be found in Carmel Creek.¹ Now it is a vast network of upscale residential communities and corporate business parks. It is located west of Rancho Peñasquitos and east of Del Mar.
